Karin Winegar | Horse Lovers

In her newest book Horse Lovers, Karin Winegar does the deepest dive yet into the nature of horse craziness that incurable attraction and joy so many of us feeling in the presence of horses. Why are girls and women so very often horse lovers? Who are we, this subset of female humans: risk takers, romantics, independents, all this or something else? Horse Lovers untangles the roots of female horse craziness, sizes it up, assesses its causes and effects.

This book explores in depth who we are and why we feel and do what we do. It is a trail of exaltations, adventures and inquiries. It is about a colorful worldwide culture, about vivid lives and about a unique form of love.

Karin Winegar’s freelance work has appeared in publications ranging from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal to Practical Horseman, Cowboys & Indians, Conde Nast Traveler and Sailing magazine.  Her commentaries have appeared in the Star Tribune, MPR and has been a guest on many other shows and podcasts. She is the author of six books, including the bestselling SAVED: Rescued Animals and the Lives They Transform, which ranked #1 on Amazon in its category for months.

Karin Winegar has won numerous awards in the equine industry including two AQHA Steel Dust Awards and the U.S. Equestrian Award. Her work has won Lowell Thomas Awards for both investigative reporting and for maritime journalism.

This event will be moderated by poet and horse-lover Marilyn Baszczynski.  She is a retired French teacher, originally from Ontario, Canada, who lives and writes in rural Iowa. She has two chapbooks: Gyuri. A poem of Wartime Hungary, and daughter, while i’m still here; her poems appear in numerous journals and anthologies including Abaton, Aurorean, Backchannels, Conestoga Zen, Gyroscope, Half-Way Down the Stairs, Healing Muse, Last Stanza, Midwest Poetry, Scapegoat, Shot Glass Journal, Star82 Review, Slippery Elm, and others. Marilyn is past-president of Iowa Poetry Association and editor-in-chief of their annual anthology, Lyrical Iowa, since 2017
