Bring the Family to Read Aloud Day!
10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Children’s Authors Gather in Celebration of Children’s Book Week
Load up the kids and head to Beaverdale Books for a fun-filled day of stories! We have a great lineup of children’s authors who will share their stories throughout the day. This event is co-hosted by Society of Children’s Writers and Illustrators – Iowa/Minnesota.
Here’s the schedule:
10:30 a.m. – Balloons for Papa by Liz Bedia – A perfect book to help discuss mental health, depression, empathy, loss, and hope with young children.
11:15 a.m. – This Kid Can Hyperfocus by Patty DeDurr – An inclusive story of friendship and determination whose main character is a goat with ADHD.
12:00 noon – Russell Wrestles the Relatives by Cindy Johnson – Russell’s family of big, brawny, and boisterous wrestlers has him on the run in this vibrant celebration of what it means to be a family.
12:45 p.m. – What’s Silly Hair Day with No Hair? by Norene Paulson – A delightful picture book about a young girl with alopecia, who is not sure how to navigate Silly Hair Day at school.
1:30 p.m. –Mia the Magnificent by Eileen Boggess – A brilliantly-conceived spy novel introducing seven engaging characters whose lives are transformed by crisis.
2:15 p.m. – A Wild Day at the Zoo by Victor Santos – A sweet and educational picture book introduction to the wonders and diversity of the zoo, as well as the wonders and diversity of human languages.
3:00 p.m. – The Ocean Calls by Tina Cho – A breathtaking picture book featuring a Korean girl and her haenyeo (free diving) grandmother about intergenerational bonds, finding courage in the face of fear, and connecting with our natural world.
3:45 p.m. – Messages on the Moon by Jill Friestad-Tate – A non-fiction picture book which illuminates the true story behind a little-known object that united the world in peace and hope.
With the goal of promoting conversation about why kids choose to read the books they do, Every Child a Reader and the Children’s Book Council chose a slogan for the 2022 Children’s Book Week, “How Do You Book?” The thought-provoking theme asks participants in the literacy celebration to think about what they read, where they read, and how they read.
It’s a great question to share and begin a discussion with a child you love.
