Encourage Kids to Say Hello to Iowa Destinations

Hello Iowa was published in January of 2019. It’s a guide to a variety of sites in Iowa,  and it’s written in a way that helps children learn about our great state. Bring the kids to meet author Mary Gordon and illustrator Candace Camling as they share stories about their work and the fascinating sites featured in the book.

Mary Gordon worked in the Des Moines Public School system for 37 years as a teacher, reading and math program coordinator and elementary principal.  She was a partner in Gordon and Royal Educational Consulting and has also written two other children’s books, Bedtime Surprise and Little Bethlehem Star.

Candace Camling lives in Des Moines, Iowa where she writes and creates artwork in her attic studio. She lives with her family–including two naughty cats. She earned a BFA in illustration and digital media from Kendall College of Art & Design.  Being an illustrator means getting to solve visual problems, learning about new topics constantly and trying to bring a little joy into the world. Her favorite things to read are non-fiction picture books, graphic novels, and anything with a hint of magic. Candace has won many awards in juried shows and contests. She has also worked with a wide variety of clients and collaborators.
